Geographical Features

Vizianagaram is the main city of the Vizianagaram District of North Eastern Andhra Pradesh in Southern India. Vizianagaram district was formed on 1 June 1979, with some parts carved from the neighbouring districts of Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. It is, at present, the largest municipality of Andhra Pradesh in terms of population. It is located about 18 km inland from the Bay of Bengal, and 52 km northeast of Visakhapatnam.

Geography: Vizianagaram District was formed as 23rd district in the State on 1stJune, 1979 with Headquarters at Vizianagaram as per G.O.Ms.No.700/Revenue(U) Department, dated.15th May 1979 with portions carved from Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam Districts. The district is a part of the Northern Coastal plains of Andhra Pradesh and lies between 17o -15’ and 19o -15’ of the Northern Latitude and 83o – 0’ to 83O – 45’ of the Eastern Longitude. It is bounded on the East by Srikakulam district, on the West and South by Visakhapatnam district, on the South-East by Bay of Bengal and North-West by Orissa State. The main rivers are Gostani, Suvarnamukhi, Vegavathi, Gomukhi, Champavathi.

Revenue Structure: Vizianagaram District has 03 Revenue Divisions i.e., Vizianagaram, Bobbiliand Cheepurupallidivisions consist of 27Mandals and 777  Gram Panchayats. It also has a Municipal Corporation of Vizianagaram, Bobbili municipality and 2Nagarapanchayatsnamely Nellimarla and Rajam.

Police Structure: The District has three (03) Police Sub-Divisions viz Vizianagaram, Bobbili, Cheepurupalli, 07 Circles , No of Inspector SHO Police Stations- 07 and 33 Police stations including 30 Law and Order PS, 1 Traffics PS, Disha Women PS and CCS

Population: As of the 2011 Census of India, the town had a population of 227,533. The total population constituted 111,596 males and 115,937 females—a sex ratio of 1,039 females per 1,000 males, higher than the national average of 940 per 1,000.  20,487 children are in the age group of 0–6 years, of which 10,495 are boys and 9,992 are girls. The average literacy rate stood at 81.85% with 169,461 literates, significantly higher than the national average of 73.00%
